On Thursday, August 23, D.C. United players Bobby Boswell and Domenic Mediate made a visit to the United Reads Reading Corner at the Children's Health Center on Good Hope Road, in southeast D.C.
The audience included patients receiving their annual back-to-school check-ups as well as a special group of children from Young's Memorial Day Care. The children enjoyed soccer-themed stories and each child received new books, folders and other reading materials to get excited about going back to school.
United for D.C. launched the Reading Corner at the Children's Health Center on Good Hope Road in March of 2006, with the first one opening at the Children's Health Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave, SE in June of 2005. The goal of each Reading Corner is to provide a fun soccer-themed atmosphere where children and their families can read while waiting to visit their doctor, as well as to promote physical activity as part of a child's healthy development.
In partnership with Reach Out and Read of Metro D.C., a physician-led early literacy intervention, United for D.C. also provide books to children who visit the health center. United for D.C. is committed to making regular visits with D.C. United players to each reading corner throughout the year to continue to emphasize the importance of reading.
