WASHINGTON, D.C. - United for D.C., the
charitable arm of D.C. United, announced it grossed $50,000 at the
Fifth Annual United Celebrity Golf Tournament, presented by East West
Mortgage and R&R Catering, on Monday, June 5. Proceeds from the
event, held at the Old Hickory Golf Club in Woodbridge, VA, will
benefit the charity's four signature programs - United Reads, Kicks for
Kids, United Community Grants and the United Soccer Club - all of which
place an emphasis on literacy, healthy lifestyles and/or life skills
for youth in the Washington, D.C. area through the sport of soccer.
"This fifth-year event may have been the most logistically sound
and overall the most fun of the tournament's history," said Catherine
Marquette, Executive Director of United for D.C. and United's Director
of Community Relations. "Old Hickory proved once again to be a
first-class golf course, and East West Mortgage, R&R Catering and
other other contributors helped us make the event not only a successful
one on the links but also one from a fundraising perspective. We raised
some significant dollars for the charity, which will help us as we
expand our signature programs this off-season."
East West Mortgage was one of two presenting sponsors of the
tournament in its first year involved with United for D.C. R&R
Catering, along with being the second presenting sponsor, donated the
lunch and dinner buffet shared by the approximately 200 participants,
staff and volunteers. Budweiser donated beverages at the event. Clark
Construction Group LLC signed on as a two-hole sponsor of the event,
while ARAMARK Sports & Entertainment, the Washington Examiner,
United Bank, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, HKS, Budweiser, Qurist and
Arent Fox all participated as one-hole sponsors. Prize donors included
District-based Drilling Tennis & Golf along with Dick's Sporting
Goods, Nike and adidas as well as restaurants Porter's and The Ugly
Mug.
Golfers teed off in a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start and played a
five-man best ball, captain's choice. Team and individual prizes were
awarded this year. First place went to the Friends of Peter Magellan
team, which included United President and CEO Kevin Payne, Peter
Magellan, Michael Williams, John Miller and Lance Howden. Second place
went to the Doug Thompson family team of assistant coach Mark Simpson,
Doug Thompson Jr., Doug Thompson Sr., Jason Thompson and Pam Thompson.
The Washington Examiner/Arent Fox team came in third place with Comcast
SportsNet broadcaster Russ Thaler. Last place went to team Budweiser of
